Short codes (being shorter) seem easier to say, remember, and may encourage your members or visitors to take action to a greater extent.
What’s a shared short code?
A short code is a 5-7 digit number (as opposed to your local, 10-digit telephone number). Since short codes are expensive, PastorsLine has leased one for our partners to share.
Why use a short code?
Short codes (being shorter) seem easier to say, remember, and may encourage your members or visitors to take action to a greater extent. Telling someone to text the keyword WELCOME to 77411 (in order to opt-in) may be more effective than telling someone to text WELCOME to (844) 285-1815. This is especially relevant for large, opt-in campaigns, especially in front of a live audience.
And if you are a large organization sending hundreds or thousands of messages at once, this is still your fastest option. With PastorsLine, in theory, you can process up to 100 SMS/second with a short code as opposed to 4–75 SMS/sec with local numbers.
What’s a keyword?
A keyword is a WORD or PHRASE you can set up within PastorsLine to trigger a specific campaign (autoreply or data capture text bot). With the local, 10-digit numbers that we offer, you can set up virtually unlimited keywords as the number is unique to your account. However, our PastorsLine shared short code 77411 is leased to our application and would be available to all of our church partners. This means the short code keyword would then have to be unique to each church.

Here Are Some Key Factors In Estimating Your Costs:
Free short code keywords
Generally: words/phrases of 4 digits or more which are not spelled like real words/phrases -OR- words/phrases of 11 digits or more (spelling does not matter).
Pro tip: These would all be free - “WelcomeHome”; “KIDZ”; "FBCNYC" (First Baptist Church in NY); "NEWHERE"; "FBCCONNECT"; "1Corinthians".
Numbers are considered regular/free except for 1-3 digit numbers.
Premium short code keywords
Real dictionary words/phrases of 10 letters or less. You can purchase unlimited premium short code keywords, and you get a discount depending on your plan.
E.g. KIDS (4 digits) would be considered premium and church-centric.
***All 1-3 digit phrases are also considered as premium regardless of spelling.***
Discounts per plans
Higher plans get a larger percentage (up to 80%) discount on premium short code keywords.
One-time Access fee
This is a set-up fee which ensures churches that are serious about engagement can get the words they need while avoiding “keyword squatting” by those who intend to use a word but never do. There is a one-time access fee for each premium, short code keyword you choose.
This fee can be applied to a different keyword if you change your mind.
Christianese
Some “real word” short code keywords are particularly Christian-centric or faith-oriented or just in very high demand. These keywords carry a higher one-time access fee and recurring costs.
Recurring short code keyword costs
Each premium keyword is renewed either monthly or yearly depending on your preference. No contracts, and you can cancel/release the keyword at any time.
Pro Tip: We highly recommend only getting short code keywords for major campaigns or any campaign with a dedicated strategy. You can still use our free and unlimited local number keywords for smaller campaigns.
